IPRNmail Arctic Frontiers PhD/student workshop

PhD/student workshop

In concert with Arctic Frontiers, the ARCTOS network will arrange a student workshop – "BIO-8516 Arctic Frontiers PhD/student workshop" (master students may apply, but PhD students are prioritized). As part of the workshop, students have to participate in the entire conference, political and scientific part and give a presentation (oral or poster).

After the conference, they will embark on a 5 day seminar to Lofoten, during which they will prepare a proposal for funding to an imaginary research grant. The proposal will be presented and evaluated on the last day of the workshop. During the workshop there will be lectures about proposal writing as well as cultural events. The workshop is multidisciplinary and thus suitable for students from any scientific field.

It is an official PhD level course at the University of Tromsø worth 4 ECTS. Master students cannot receive any ECTS. Travel and conference funding is available for workshop participants. To be eligible for the course, applicants must have a poster or oral presentation accepted at Arctic Frontiers. Please check out the blog for some impressions of the 2013 workshop: https://youngscientistforum.wordpress.com/

IPRNmail Fwd: Research funding opportunity for developing country scientists

--------------------------------------------
Here is an interesting and exciting opportunity for scientists in developing countries to earn funding from the United States Agency for International Development's Partnership for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) program.

PEER is part of the U.S. Global Development Lab, a competitive grants program "that supports developing country researchers engaged in collaborative, development-focused research with U.S. government-funded scientists." PEER is particularly interested in research focused on addressing urban sanitation, improving water conservation, using geospatial tools to investigate climate change, development challenges in Indonesia, wildlife trafficking and conservation in Kenya, climate change adaptation in the Maldives, transboundary water issues in Central Asia, biodiversity in the Brazilian Amazon, and forestry and climate change in India.

Please see the attached press release about the program from USAID. Also – you'll want to visit the PEER website to learn more about the application process and eligibility requirements.

Here is a bit more info on PEER

"What is PEER:  PEER is Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research and is a research funding program jointly run by the Global Development Lab at USAID and the National Academy os Sciences.  We directly fund developing country scientists who have active collaborations with US Government funded researchers.  We partner with US agencies that fund extramural researchers (NIH, NSF, USDA, Smithsonian, USGS, and NASA) to link US researcher with researchers in developing countries to leverage US research resources for research for development.  We fund a variety of projects, anything from basic science projects to applied science ad also social science, and have currently funded over developing country scientists over the last 3 years. We are about to launch our 4th round of funding and are looking for ways to maximize our outreach to developing country scientists."
