[IPRNmail] Indian Polar Research Network (APECS-India) Executive committee (Ex-Com) elections-2020

Dear APECS-India (IPRN) members and ECRs

Greeting from the IPRN Interim Committee! I hope you are well in these bizarre times!

I am writing to announce the fresh elections of IPRN Ex-Com for the year 2020-21. For those who are not much involved in the past few years, the Indian Polar Research Network (IPRN) is the Indian National chapter of APECS International and it was founded in 2011 by a group of early career researchers (ECRs) just like yourselves. Currently, IPRN is refreshing and restarting after a couple of years of dormant phase to align its leadership structure and mandate with APECS international. With a decade long history of this organization and involvement of very active IPRN founder members in the past, we need to take this organization to the next level by including the next new generation of ECRs. This significant reform is necessary to ensure a continuous Ex-com onboard (without annual breaks) and its election as per the IPRN constitution document, continuous updating of IPRN website and broader social outreach activities, and coordinating our activities with APECS-International.

In brief, we are looking for new faces to lead the group and work towards connecting polar researchers in India and abroad.  In this context, a meeting was conducted for setting up the process of refreshing and restarting IPRN. As a part of this, the interim committee (IC) has been formulated to conduct elections and hand over the regular activities to the newly launched Ex-Com on 20th September 2020.

Eligibility:

Early career researchers including masters/bachelors/PhD students, researcher (project fellow/research fellow/research associate/postdoctoral fellow - up to 5 years after PhD).

Preference will be given to the new candidates in IPRN and Masters/PhD students.

Benefits to Ex-com members:

  1. Increased chances of a travel grant and other funding opportunities

  2. Develop your leadership skills in the polar research network

  3. Represent a national network of polar researchers on an international platform

Roles and responsibilities of Ex-Com members

  • Look after routine activities of IPRN

  • Update social media, mailing list, and website

  • Conducting regular meetings with IPRN members

  • Look after the activities conducted by all IPRN members

  • IPRN membership development

  • Establishing an advisory board

  • Collaborations with other organizations

  • Conducting workshops, seminars, and virtual poster sessions, webinars, panel discussions

  • Seek funding sources from APECS international and national authorities

  • Report progress to the interim committee  and advisory board

If you would like to be a part of this reform and get more involved in IPRN then all you need to do is to fill the online form, consisting of these three short questions.

 1. Brief biography: Please write a short biosketch to give us a better picture of who you are (e.g. what you do; your research interests). For format and content, you can use as an example the bios of the current APECS-international Council members http://www.apecs.is/who-we-are/leadership/council.html

2. Past experience in IPRN or APECS international or any other polar-related organization: Please note that if you interested in becoming more involved in IPRN but the Ex-Com sounds like too much for now, you may express your interest in being council member, who would be working with one of the Ex-com members. You would still need to fill the online form to express your interest in the council position.

3. Are you expecting a long physical absence because of a field campaign or expedition from July 2020 to June 2021? It's important that the members who stand for the Ex-Com election clearly mention in their application if they would be out in sea/expedition for a long period during their tenure as Ex-com.
