In case you aren't on Cryolist, I thought this might be of interest.

Best,

-----------------------------

PhD studentship opportunity in Glaciology at Norway for Indian citizens

To strengthen the field of polar glaciology in India, National Centre for Antarctic & Ocean Research (NCAOR), in collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) is establishing two PhD studentships in Antarctic and Arctic glaciology. The students will carry out research based at NPI's Headquarters in Tromsø, and are expected to follow and complete their PhD course work at the University of Oslo (UiO). The students will be jointly supervised by researchers at UiO, NPI and NCAOR. The successful candidates are expected to play a key role in promoting polar glaciology in India, upon receiving their doctoral degrees.

REMINDER - join the broadcast of the 1st SOOS Asian workshop!

REGISTRATION OPEN TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FIRST ASIAN WORKSHOP OF THE
SOUTHERN OCEAN OBSERVING SYSTEM VIA THE APECS GoToMeeting SYSTEM

Hello APECS members and friends,

This is a reminder that the registration to participate in the first
Asian Workshop of the Southern Ocean Observing System via the APECS
GoToMeeting system is open. To register, send an email to APECS
ex-officio member in the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS)
Scientific Steering Commette (SSC), Tosca Ballerini
(tosca.ballerini@univ-amu.fr).

WHAT?
The first Asian Workshop of the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS)
will be held the 23-24 May in Shangai, China. The workshop will
provide an opportunity to highlight the research and observations
being undertaken by Asian countries in the Southern Ocean and to
stimulate discussion and foster further involvement from Asian
countries in SOOS activities
(http://www.soos.aq/index.php/calendar/meetings-workshops).

The SOOS Asian Workshop is sponsored by the Polar Research Institute
of China (PRIC), the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR)
and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR). During the
Day 1 (23 May) there will be oral presentations by representatives
from the Asian scientific community to illustrate their national and
organizational research and observation activities in the Southern
Ocean.

WHY?
The workshop organizers warmly encourage APECS members from Asian
countries to participate in Day 1 (23 May) of the workshop via the
APECS GoToMeeting system. Participating in the workshop will provide
early career scientists an overview of the Polar research conducted in
their country.

HOW?
Interested APECS members can register to participate in the workshop
sending an email to APECS ex-officio member in the SOOS Scientific
Steering Commette (tosca.ballerini@univ-amu.fr) by Friday 18 May.
Places in the GoToMeeting are limited to 26 people, and precedence
will be given to students.

For more information about the workshop visit
http://www.soos.aq/index.php/calendar?view=event&cid=42 and have a
look at the workshop schedule (see attached document).

Please spread the voice with your colleagues / students that might be
interested.

Looking forward to meet you the 23rd May via the APECS GoToMeeting!

Best wishes,
Tosca Ballerini

Department of Science & Technology (DST) initated training programme on

Capacity Building in Himalayan Glaciology - Level I & II

Organized by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)

Under the auspices of Climate Change Programme, NMSHE mission, DST and SDC-DST scientific cooperation on Glaciology and related areas

April 1 to April 27, 2013

Application deadline: March 10, 2013

Objective: Under the National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE), the Climate Change Division of the Department of Science & Technology (DST)is entrusted with the responsibility of developing the human, institutional and knowledge capacities in the Indian Himalayan Region. DST has initiated a scientific cooperation programme with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in the field of glaciology and related areas. The Capacity Building Programme on Himalayan Glaciology aims at enhancing the human and institutional capacities of Indian students and researchers.

Course Structure

Capacity Building Programme on Himalayan Glaciology will comprise of two levels. Level I will be a basic course with approximately 25-30 students and will be of four weeks duration. About 10-15 participants will be selected for Level II from the basic course, an advanced course of approximate three months duration including glacier field work preferably from August /September. Finally about 2-5 participants may be selected based on the performance evaluation in Level II by expert committee for a proposed research programme under DST Climate Change Programme on specialized topics to be jointly supervised by Indian and Swiss faculty.

Venue, travel and accommodation

The course will be held from April 1 to April 27, 2013 at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Students will be provided boarding and lodging for the course duration. Course participants will be reimbursed for to and fro journey (upto 3AC trainfare) to New Delhi on production of valid tickets.

Eligibility and Application Procedure

Candidates should possess Masters in Earth Sciences / Remote Sensing / Physics / Environmental Sciences / Civil Engineering / Geography.  Ph.D. students or fresh Post Docs with exposure/experience in glacier research will be given preference.
