Great to hear form you. And please don't worry about being late or anything. We are just getting started and this is a just a beginning of atleast few more years of quite productive times ahead. Hope you enjoy the vacation and while time allows please check out the documents online.

Looking forward to seeing you in the meeting.

To the rest of you, Suhas and PB are taking much responsibilities in running the meeting and I am volunteering to take few notes and help prepare the report for the meeting. But we need few others to help taking notes during the meeting. May I have few folks coming up and volunteer to help us out with this? It will be a learning experience for us all and will also be greatly appreciated!!
Looking forward to hearing from you all.

You all are doing an awesome job anyway! Keep me posted and I will try my best to contribute.

I would echo what Santonu said. Let us first get the APECS-India up and running and then as time progresses we can invite senior scientists in advisory capacities in the National Committee.
Definitely in the long run Indian Polar Network would be a great thing to do.

Hi Sonal,

Thanks a lot for taking the time edit the online documents.
The idea of bringing in Indian scientists is a fantastic idea and definitely need to take note of anyone beyond this list working in the polar region from India. But at present, it probably is a good idea to confine this effort to the young scientists atleast to start with. The senior scientists can be invited in the near future to present talks and may be involve in advisory type of roles. Just my idea and I know everyone would have his/her opinion on this. Looking forward to hear from the rest.

Thanks for supporting the idea of Indian Polar Network, this should be happening alongside/beyond APECS-India as well. Looking forward to more interactions and hear from you all in the near future.

Dear All,

I have updated the google doc containing skype ids with my correct name and id. Much thanks to Anant and Santonu for this initiative. Just a quick question - can we include any Indian scientists in APECS India who are working or associated with Polar research or will they have to be in their "Early" career stage? We have a database of Indian scientists working in the Arctic (Svalbard, Norway) in Kingsbay website and we/I can contact them but I need to know if senior Indian polar scientists can also be a part of APECS-India.

To be honest, I really like the idea of IPN (Indian Polar Network) to be formed besides APECS-India. I would have volunteered myself to take notes and prepare reports but since this is my final year of PhD I am unable to commit a lot at this moment.

Lets hear from others as well.

Also I think some of the IITs and IISc have students working on Polar issues.. try and get the announcement out to as many people as possible..

I REALLY really want APECS - INDIA to get off the ground, maybe too much! The problem is, when I was around in India, there was nothing of this sort. To have an organisation that looks after young researcher's needs is amazing and I feel you all should make use of this opportunity. APECS itself is growing leaps and bounds, and APECS - India can make an amazing contribution towards it.

Ok, all that over, can someone PLEASE set a date for an online meeting in the next fortnight or so?

I am SO looking forward to seeing APECS-India take off..

First of all thanks to Renuka for writing this email down.

I have just changed the settings for the APECS India Facebook Page. All the
members have you now administrator rights which means anybody can post and
reply. The email ID is apecs.india@gmail.com and the password is

The facebook page was never meant to be a 'PERSONAL' one.

To the best of my knowledge there is not a formal committee running APECS
India. This should have been done much earlier. Can't we find sometime and
set up a skype call and discuss what we want to do including the workshop?

Hi guys,

I trust all of you are now back home. How about setting this meeting we
had talked about before but not finalised. There are a lot of ideas
floating around, I think you should really sit down and formalise things!

There was another issue which I needed to bring out - when I commented on the APECS-India facebook page, whether anyone had thought about the workshop - the reply I got was "Not really...half of the folks do not respond to the emails". I dont know who administers the FB page, but saying things like this is really not on. That is a public page of the organisation, and who-ever manages the page needs to be more professional (by the way - I have learnt this the hard way too!). By the way, whoever wrote that, also did not answer my next question re. who runs the page. That question was posed on Thursday, its still not been answered.

Another question which I had was - who exactly is running APECS-India? Is there a committee? are there terms of reference? Any progress made towards this? There are a LOT of people who are interested and have fantastic ideas, please make use of them. If people are not responding, use the ones that are. Remember, the ones that don't bother will not be able to gain any experience or make any contacts, so they are the ones who lose out, not the ones that do participate.

Ok, very long email.. Back to my Sunday - Have a happy rest of the weekend guys and gals! -Renuka.

Dear All,

Sorry for my long silence. The idea of Indian Polar Network sounds good. However we should not duplicate efforts and detach ourselves from the international young polar researcher community. The legacy of APECS has been exemplary. We already have a virtual National Committee of APECS in India. Let us work together to make the national committee stronger and at the same time we can build up the Indian Polar Network.

This brings us back to the point which I raised earlier. We need to get
together at some place and time to discuss about what we want to do?

Regarding funding, yes definitely we can write proposals for MoES. But
before we undertake such activities there has to be common understanding
how we envisage Indian Polar Network, its activities and objectives.

So let us keep the discussion going.

PB

Hi all the Indian Polar Researchers,

Punyasloke, thank you very much for getting back to us even during a busy schedule. My best wishes to your trip and research work. Have a lot of fun with the exciting trip!!

Thank you for informing us about the APECS-India facebook page. It is wonderful to know about it. APECS is a legacy of IPY and it will remain so, some wonderful work has gone into building this international network of early career researchers. I have been involved with APECS for sometime now and was fortunate enough to help with several meetings/exhibition/committees/proposals etc.

India has a strong history in polar research with such a strong presence in the Antarctic. With the operation of Indian Arctic research, it has surely covered the entire polar geographic region to make its presence felt in the international polar research arena. And as we all know that it is just a beginning towards building a very strong Arctic/Antarctic research. This itself talks about the need for "Indian Polar Network" which can act as a platform for Indian polar researchers to communicate with each other. The early career researchers still going to have the option of becoming a part of the larger APECS community. I strongly believe that with a separate website of "Indian Polar Network", we will be better off extending collaboration with international communities as well beyond APECS. And APECS is always where started with so we will continue to work with APECS.

These are just my thoughts. I would like to invite all of you to
contribute to this discussion towards building an Indian Polar Network.

Cheers,

Santonu

Anyway, back to Santonu and Punyasloke emails. Punyasloke, wish you all
the very best for your trip and work.

We are aware of APECS and am happy to see APECS India presence on FB. But it would be nice to have a website where we can have profiles of all the Indians working in Polar regions and update it monthly or so. It is a very small group to start with in comparison to APECS who have some 1000s member all over the world. So, I would still say it is good idea to have a website only for Indian polar researchers :). Be it either APECS India website or IPRN (Indian Polar Research Network) or IPN (Indian Polar Network). It would be good to hear from other people as well.

About the funding, can we not make some proposals to Ministries in
India, e.g.Ministry of Earth Sciences?

Hi Renuka, Greetings for the New Year 2012 and hope the new year brings a lot more success in the coming months. I just finished my PhD here in University of Texas at El Paso with a focus in studying climate change effects in Arctic using Remote Sensing. I am joining the Dept. of Forestry in Michigan State University as a postdoc soon to work in a NASA funded project to model carbon source and sinks for large areas using forest inventory and remote sensing data (LiDAR). My interest in Arctic research remains intact and I hope to develop colaborative research proposals in near future as and when opportunities arise. I do have a strong interest in the Indian Arctic program and wondering if you would know anyone who might be involved in the program and would also take an interest in extending collaboration. Any suggestion or advice regarding this would be greatly appreciated and extremely helpful. Attached is a copy of my current CV to give you an insight of my experiences and training in the Arctic research. Thanks in advance.

Subject: APECS-INDIA meeting

Dear All,

We believe, that  APECS-INDIA is a group that will carry forwards the momentum of polar research, education and outreach in the years to come. To take on this challenge, we have to establish a strong, credible and effective operational framework and gain recognition within the international scientific community, creating a foundation for our APECS-INDIAN early career researchers involvement in the major polar organizations and beyond.

Thanks to the support of APECS Director, APECS excom and NCAOR, we have been able to lay  foundation of APECS-INDIA. Looking to the future, we seek to strengthen our core activities and international representation to sustain APECS-INDIA as an important component of the education and development of all polar scientists. To do this, we have to develop a plan combining our need to become financially stable. Also we need to plan for our major upcoming activities in 2012.

Keeping all this in mind, we have scheduled an online meeting on 14th March at 7pm IST. Kindly confirm your participation. If anybody has some problem kindly inform at the earliest and kindly comment on the agenda, so that we know your thoughts. The report from the meeting will be circulated within a week after the meeting.

The link for the meeting agenda is given below, kindly add to it
