An internship opportunity is available at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama to participate in research on tropical forest dynamics. The central responsibility is the analysis of seasonal and interannual variation in tree growth and its relationship to climate in long-term datasets from the CTFS-ForestGEO network.  Responsibilities will include quality assurance/quality control of the relevant datasets, programming and running analyses (in R), and drafting a manuscript reporting the analyses.  The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in local field research including measurements of tree growth with dendrometers and monitoring of forest phenology and dynamics using unmanned aerial vehicles.  The successful candidate will work closely with staff scientist Helene Muller-Landau.  The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute is located in Panama, and is home to a vibrant scientific community of 30 staff scientists, over 100 graduate and postdoctoral fellows, and over 500 scientific visitors per year.

The ideal candidate has a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, strong quantitative and data management skills (including programming experience, preferably in R), scientific writing skills, some research experience, and enthusiasm for forest ecology research.  The position is particularly well suited for candidates seeking research experience prior to graduate school.  This position will be compensated with a modest stipend sufficient to cover living expenses in Panama (minimum $800/month; negotiable), as well as roundtrip travel to Panama if relevant. Initial appointment is for 6 months, and is renewable contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.   The start date is flexible; start dates in August or September 2014 are preferred.

To apply, please email a cover letter describing your qualifications and interest in the position, CV, and contact information for 3 references to

Helene Muller-Landau at mullerh@si.edu.  Review of applications will commence on July 1, 2014, and continue until the position is filled.
